Winter… and Dairy Heifers!
There are numerous known advantages to having dairy heifers calve at 24 months of age. In order to achieve this goal, there are several important aspects to keep in mind: nutrition, environment and management. Managing Dairy Calves and Heifers During Winter Months

Attention to dairy calf/heifer management is important for maintaining growth rates, minimizing health issues, and optimizing future profitability of the dairy farm. The winter months are ahead, and with most of the harvest completed it’s time to prepare for these upcoming winter months.

Renaissance Report - October 2011

Calves may need special care during fall and winter months, as temperatures begin to fall and weather changes become more variable. During the coming months, calves may need additional nutrients to better meet growth and maintenance requirements. Their need is more critical during the period immediately following birth, with special attention to many management-related possibilities as well.
